CNA Skills Which Help Patients Avoid Frustration

Many times CNA skills can help a patient overcome a frustrating situation they may encounter due to physical limitations. The ability to perform daily tasks may diminish with age leading to agitation and possibly depression. While people are encouraged to do as much as they can to help retain as much strength as possible, there may also be ways around some of the difficulties.

CNA skills involve training in spotting difficulties residents are having and finding ways to address them. The ability to choose clothes and to dress oneself is a form of independence which patients may not want to lose. One common example of when this becomes frustrating is when the patients are no longer able to tie their own shoes but still would like to wear tennis shoes for comfort while walking. Many of these are available in styles with Velcro fasteners which allow the patients to continue dressing themselves. Using Velcro fasteners in place of buttons on tops is easy solution to a common problem. Family members are often encouraged to help find solutions or possibly take items home and replace the buttons with easier fasteners.

Using CNA skills such as helping patients find simpler ways to feed themselves through the use of different utensils is another way to help avoid frustration. People may lose the ability to grab small or thin items such as traditional silverware. These are now available with easier to handle larger grips which allow the user to hold onto them more firmly while eating. For patients who have difficulty spilling their liquids a covered cup or using a straw may be a simple fix. Being observant to the issues the resident is facing and helping to find ways to help correct the problem is one of the kindest ways for a nursing assistant to help their patients.

Students are taught many of the CNA skills they need during classroom time, however it is difficult to touch on every aspect of the job. Many more skills and ideas are gleamed from actually performing the every day duties and tasks. When you are having difficulties finding a suitable solution to a problem discuss it with other staff members. They may have ideas from encountering the same situation in the past or may come up with a totally novel solution. Learning to apply CNA skills to help patients avoid frustrations is ongoing and will help them to feel more independent and happier, while giving the caregiver a deep feeling of satisfaction as well.
